Why this book exists

Sule Abdul Rahman grew up in Bando, near Elmina. He lost his father early. His mother's illness stretched the family thin for years that mattered. What carried him through was not a single lucky break — it was learning, slowly and out of necessity, how to build structure out of very little.

He carried that instinct into agriculture and organisational work — first at CSIR-SARI, then with the Masara N'Arziki Farmers Association, then as Technical/Commercial Business Partner Coordinator at the Agricultural Labour Services Agency — before founding an agribusiness consulting practice in Northern Ghana. Everywhere he has worked, he has seen the same pattern: people working harder than anyone should have to, in organisations that still cannot tell you what a bag of maize actually costs to produce.

From Effort to Systems is what he has learned about closing that gap — written for the people doing the work, not the people funding it.

At 5:30 a.m., the cooperative chairman was already in the field. By 8:00 p.m., he was still solving problems. Everyone called him hardworking. Yet his cooperative was losing money.

Development programmes have trained millions of farmers. Yet many communities remain trapped in the same cycle. The uncomfortable reality is that training alone rarely changes organisational performance. Systems do.

In 2021, I visited a farmer group that had received more support in three years than some cooperatives receive in a decade. They had tractors, seed, fertiliser, and training. Yet they could not tell me how much it cost to produce a bag of maize. The problem was not resources. The problem was that nobody had built a management system.
